RE: I am trying to extract support reactions of a particular node for all Load case and combinations. But my script is extraction "0" values for all forces. Need help!

I have reviewed your code. There are only two mistakes for which the support reaction values are extract as zero. You have incorrectly used the variable names during specifying the variable type. You have used the following function--

objOpenSTAAD.Output.GetSupportReactions NodeA, loadcase, dReactionArray

The variable types are defined as--

loadcas As Integer

Dim NodesA As Long

As the variable types for NodeA and loadcase (used in the function) are not specified in your code, the support reactions values are extracted incorrectly. You need to modify the variable names as --

Dim loadcase As Long

Dim NodeA As Long

After this change, you will find that correct reaction values are extracted.

You are using a very old version of STAAD.Pro. Results object functions are used in this version which are now obsolete. All the results object functions has been replaced with the application object functions. Also the Help manual has been updated and misinformation related to the latest functions are available. We recommend to use the latest version of the software (STAAD.Pro SS6, build 20.07.11.50) and check the issue in this version.

OpenSTAAD Objects for VBA (Do Not Seem To Work)?

Hi there,

I'm just learning how to use the OpenSTAAD and I just encountered something that seems not working. I tried adding the OpenSTAAD Library to Object Browser and it displays Output. It seems to me that some of the objects therein are not working. I tried using "Output.ObjectName" and "Geometry.ObjectName" but they don't seem to work. I am puzzled because they are all found under "Output" but I cannot use them this way. I also tried "Property.ObjectName".

Or I might be doing it incorrectly? Here's an example: "objSTAADMembForces.Output.GetNumberOfEntitiesInGROUP"

The error (debug) message I am getting is: "Object does not support property or method".

I'm attaching the screenshot of my Objects Browser.

Please help. Thank you.

I have worked over the recommendation made by you on my model.

1. I define the members as truss members by partially releasing the moments at the start and the end nodes.

2. Load -- floor group should be defined as a closed panel.

3. check the height vs. intensity data as per IS875-Part 3 specifications.

3. Load Combination factore are according to the steel plastic auto load combinations

4. Changed the Design Code to Is 800:2007

But know i have some other errors in the file LIKE.

The reason for the warning message is - you have specified both member truss and member release command to the same member. You need to remove member truss command from your model. Partial moment release (with 1% fixity) at both end is sufficient to declare a member as truss.

Also you should rectify the following in your model--
There are still few floor groups which are not closed. For example, consider group B1 which is closed in three sides. So program is unable to generate floor load on this group.
You need to change the structure from STAAD PLANE to STAAD SPACE. Your model is not in a plane and there are also out of plane loads assigned on this structure.

The reason for failure is either slenderness or combined interaction. For slenderness check, as you have not specified any parameter (MAIN and TMAIN), program considers the default value. You can change the slenderness limit by specifying MAIN and TMAIN parameter according to Table 3 of IS800:2007 code. You can also bypass the check using MAIN 1 and TMAIN 1 parameter. Else you need to increase the section size or decrease the effective length of the member.

Sir i watch your lecture on you tube. I have some problem regarding my project. 

I am working on some  project in staad pro which was actually  designed and drafted by structural Engineer .

The project is the design of industrial shed. I am considering all the loads, (wind loads and other loads) which i have to apply on the structure according to the indian codes. 

The resultant steel for truss comes very high which will be uneconomical for design prospective view and not match with the designer requirements which they drafted.

If  i have a mistake in truss designing ( regarding the releases of moments or some other operation opration which left) which we have to apply pleases kindly reply.

I declare the members as truss but the results in output is not, what i required. I think, there is some what going wrong to whom i am not known. Please kindly revert me back, that where i have a mistake in file.

There are few things that are to be taken care of in the model. There are clear warning regarding inclined floor load generation-some panels are not getting loaded. You need to fix it.

You have un-factored load combinations. I believe you want to use IS:800-2007 WSD method instead of LSD.

There has been an update in the program to specifically impel the users to create two different type of envelops- Service and Strength to cater two different aspect of design- deflection checking with Service Envelop and member design using Strength Envelop. This provides a clear vision on design aspect.

AISC ASD code refers to Allowable Stress Design, AISC LRFD is Load and Resistance factor Design and AISC 360-05 refers to the Unified code or it is a single design code which follows the same design equations but the final design strength is determined by multiplying and diving the nominal strength by some coefficient respectively. For AISC-ASD code, the the Design strength is determined by diving the Nominal strength by 1.67, whereas in case of AISC -LRFD code, the design strength is determined by multiplying with the resistance factor of 0.9...Now, regarding your second part of query, just wondering if you have used the AISC LRFD Load Combination in your second model. If not, then it is very obvious that the design strength determined in case of AISC-ASD will be lesser than that of AISC LRFD as you are scaling down the nominal strength by 1.67 in the former situation and scaling down the Nominal strength by (1/0.9=1.11) in the latter one, which means AISC-ASD model has lesser design strength of a selected member than that of the AISC-LRFD model and hence the structure is failing in the first model.

The structure is very stiff in Vertical direction ( Y dir.) . Generally, we consider the effect of vertical motion of the structure if there are cantilever and vertical projections. Thus, we don’t need to consider the modes with Y direction mass participation in the analysis.

Sir,
The below steel structure is analysed for sesismic loading.
I modelled the foundation of structure using plate element and for soil structure interaction i followed impedance approach
i.e. Soil here is modeled as spring and dashpot , then the corresponding stiffness and damping values are specified in the model.

I am able to run the model.

My query:

In mode shape generated i am seeing the foundation  not connected to the structure i.e. it seems the foundation is independent.
Pls. check the model and help me to understand the problem.

Hi, I have run your model but didn't see any failed member. Assuming that if you increase the web depth, few of the members failed.
As I don't have your model which has the failed member when the depth is increased, so I can give you a generic reason. When the depth is increased, its very natural that the overall section modulus or the axial cross sectional area is increased making that member more resistant against global failure, but there is also another phenomenon which guides the failure condition. That is the "local element buckling". When the web depth is increased keep the thickness constant, the web element is getting more slender and is more susceptible to local buckling failure. You may want to proportionately increase the web thickness and see if that section is passed.
