Use of Lz factor in design of steel beam

In some of the staad files , I have observed that the designers are giving Lz factor for steel beams which have been made from intermediate nodes ( i.e. on the beam , in which some secondary beams are resting). I think that this command is unnecessary for the beams , as Lz controls slenderness ratio and slenderness ratio has nothing to do with the design beam. Am I correct? If no , what is controlled by Lz in the design of steel beam?
