How shall we assign the unbraced length of lateral columns in a building with a mix of latera and gravity columns supporting a flat slab? The building does have shear walls as well as a part of MWFRS.
I know for gravity columns, it will be safe to assume an effective length factor, K as 1. But is it logical to assume a K=1 for lateral columns as well? The question that is stumping me is that the lateral columns do take part in resisting the lateral loads but are they not braced by the slab against sidesway?
