RE: Lateral load path using hanging columns as lateral members - RAM Frame

Using hanging columns to transfer lateral loads up to a higher story should work fine so long as there is a valid load path. Keep in mind, the load path has to be constructed entirely of lateral members since the gravity members are not in the analysis. You'll also need some column fixity or braces for stability, otherwise they will swing freely. Be a little careful with sloped rigid diaphragms as they can constrain the deformation in unrealistic ways. Our FAQ on Rigid diaphragms could help there. communities.bentley.com/.../18616.ram-frame-criteria-diaphragms
